Frankfurt (pte038/26.03.2003/13:54) - The use of wireless technology has increased among European companies, according to a Frost & Sullivan http://www.wireless.frost.com study published today.
The "Wi-Fi" 802.11b WLAN standard has already achieved a strong presence in Europe. About 42 per cent of companies questioned said they used this technology and 11 per cent said they were planning to introduce it soon.
Analysts say the greatest obstacles to the further spreading of wireless services are reliability, costs and security. In general, wireless services are a million euro market for mobile telecommunications, service providers and device manufacturers. Over 100 leading businesses in eight European countries took part in the study.
The report further showed that awareness of wireless technologies and services (such as WLAN, SMS, HSCSD and GPRS) had significantly increased among European firms. About 64 per cent of firms think wireless solutions will increase productivity. Those already equipped use it mainly for e-mail, personal information management (PIM) and customer relationship management (CRM). Doubts about security and high costs have however kept the number of firms below expectations.
Most of those who invested in WLAN said they had benefited from the new technology, but still did not consider it a solution for a comprehensive computer network. Only nine per cent said they used Bluetooth devices, but Frost & Sullivan are convinced of great potential for growth in this area.
