London (pte020/20.03.2003/12:05) - Online-banking is becoming more and more popular in Europe. A new study by market analysts Forrester Research http://www.forrester.com shows that every fifth European - or about 65 million Internet users - carried out bank business online in 2002.
By 2007 the number is expected to double to 130 million users. Southern Europe reflected the greatest growth in online banking.
The study further shows that 37 per cent of European Internet users regularly do their banking online - double the amount in 2001. Forrester attributes this increase to increased marketing for such services among financial institutions.
The Netherlands showed the greatest online banking growth, with a 60 per cent increase in users in 2002. Leading Internet countries such as Germany and Great Britain or countries in Scandinavia "only" had 40 per cent growth, after experiencing a similar boom in 2001.
