Los Angeles/ Berlin (pte036/18.03.2003/15:21) - As consumers around the world snap up DVD collections of "The Simpsons", "Friends", "Buffy" and "Sex and the City", analysts say the trend could become television's next cash cow.
It seems DVD is proving an ideal medium for the re-marketing of television series. While sales of TV series on VHS remain unimpressive, the DVD format is proving highly popular with TV fans. Consumers are eager to purchase the latest hit series, as well as re-releases of classic series, which can bring TV producers and stations an unexpected source of money.
According to the LA Times, TV series on DVD make up about ten per cent of the entire DVD market. Three years ago only 100 series were available on DVD, compared to 800 today. TV producers and stations currently earn about 800m to one billion dollars a year in sales of series on DVD.
This trend can also be observed in Germany. Media-Saturn-Holding, which runs the chain stores Saturn http://www.saturn.de and Media Markt http://www.mediamarkt.de confirmed to pressetext.europe that sales growth in DVD series was much higher than general growth on the DVD market, which is currently booming.
Experts say DVD has unexpectedly turned out to be a medium from which TV might profit more than Hollywood. Series on DVD have the advantage that they take up little space and offer special features, such as interviews with TV show producers and creators.
