Reserved optimism at CeBIT halftime
Only 300,000 visitors during the first days

Hannover (pte019/17.03.2003/11:31) - The branch association of the German IT industry BITKOM http://www.bitkom.org has expressed reserved optimism about the CeBIT 2003 trade fair midway into the event.

During the first days of the industry fair, visitor attendance was ten per cent lower than last year. The percentage of German visitors has also declined.

BITKOM vice-president Willi Berchtold nevertheless thinks the industry is on its way to recovery. While the association expects the German IT sector will just manage to break even this year, it predicts it will resume three per cent growth in 2004. "If we intend to bring Germany to the forefront of Europe by 2010, then the ITC branch will have to be an important draught horse," said Berchtold.

According to the branch association, the quality of contacts at CeBIT has improved. Last year's trend of specific investment and optimisation ideas continued into this year, with a focus on temporary return of investment.

This year the CeBIT http://www.cebit.de has specialised in mobility, IT security, e-government and broadband communication. Real applications for UTMS are the centre of attention.
