Geneva (pte032/11.03.2003/12:24) - Ericsson http://www.ericsson.com has secured a patent for a new mobile phone accessory: a 'life jacket' that keeps phones from sinking under water.
The invention involves an appendage which, when applied to the back of a waterproof device, provides the necessary buoyancy. The rechargeable battery is also stored in the accessory pack.
Ericsson no longer produces mobile phones, but develops technology platforms and solutions for mobile devices. This patent may lead to a new series of 'life jackets' for devices from various manufacturers. The accessory could prove especially useful in recreational situations such as swimming and boating, as most items that fall into rivers or lakes are never retrieved.
