Germans complain of obscure news
Survey: Majority think ARD evening show too complicated

Dusseldorf (pte041/10.03.2003/14:11) - The majority of Germans struggle to get their heads around the news according to a new survey.

A survey of 1,061 Germans carried out by the Gewis social research institute http://www.gewis.de for TV magazine 'TV Hoeren und Sehen' found that a massive 88 per cent felt the nightly news programme shown on German TV network ARD was "all Greek" to them.

Only one in ten Germans said they could understand the contents of the programme and the terms used.

The director of the European Institute for the Media http://www.eim.org , Jo Groebel said: "A lot of what is shown is formulated incomprehensibly and assumes that the viewer has some previous knowledge."

However the chief editor at ARD news, Dr. Bernhard Wabnitz, said viewers were neither too stupid for the news nor was the programme too difficult to understand.

He said: "People do understand the news but they don't understand certain terms. Complex issues are dealt with and some of it is alien and new to them."
