World market for mobile phones growing
Nokia still number one, Samsung ahead of Siemens

San Jose (pte036/10.03.2003/13:33) - The world mobile phone market grew by six per cent in 2002, according to a study released today by market researchers Gartner Dataquest http://www.gartner.com .

A total of 423.4 million mobile phones were sold last year, boosted by strong sales in the fourth quarter. Growth around Christmas increased by 14 per cent compared to the previous year.

Nokia and Motorola were the best performing companies, followed by Samsung and Siemens.

"Consumers readily accepted the new handsets, especially those with a colour display," said Gartner analyst Bryan Prohm of new products appearing on the market. The study further showed that MMS was becoming more popular - an encouraging indicator for continued growth in 2003.

Four of the top five mobile phone manufacturers were able to gain market shares in 2002. Only Sony Ericsson was faced with sinking sales, its market share shrinking from 6.7 per cent in 2001 to 5.5 per cent.

Branch leader Nokia increased its hold on the market to 35.8 per cent from 35 per cent in 2001. Motorola's share grew from 14.8 to 15.3 per cent.

Samsung had a surprising 47.6 per cent growth rate, securing a market share of 9.8 per cent and edging Siemens back to fourth place. Siemens did, however, manage to increase its stake from 7.4 to 8.2 per cent.
