Frankfurt (pte026/06.03.2003/13:18) - Turnover in the western European server market is rapidly falling. According to a report by heise online, turnover dropped by 18.8 per cent in 2002.
International marketing analysts IDC http://www.idc.de put IBM and HP at the forefront of the market, with HP holding a slight advantage due to its merger with Compaq. In 2002, IBM held a 31.4 per cent share of total market turnover, while HP held 27.3 per cent and Compaq 4.8 per cent. Spots four through six were held by Sun (14.2 %), Fujitsu Siemens (8.8 %) and Dell (5.6 %).
The German market was especially weak during the fourth quarter of 2002, seeing a 19.1 per cent drop in turnover compared to the same period in 2001. The market shrank by 12.7 per cent in Great Britain and 13.8 per cent in Italy.
According to heise, the percentage of Linux http://www.linux.org servers climbed to 5.4 per cent during the fourth quarter of 2002. Unix and Windows held the largest market shares, with 43.6 and 24.7 per cent respectively.
The western European server market is estimated at 3.8 bn US dollars.
