Dusseldorf (pte046/03.03.2003/15:34) - Vodafone Germany http://www.vodafone.de plans to launch its UMTS service this spring.
Jürgen Kuckowski, head of Vodafone Germany, told 'Die Welt' http://www.diewelt.de the new service would be available for the next CeBIT information technology fair http://www.cebit.de/ , where the mobile operator intends to run its first UMTS network.
By the end of the year Vodafone hopes to achieve significantly higher network coverage than the 25 per cent of the German population prescribed in its licensing conditions.
"We're going to have UMTS flying high this year", Kuckowski told 'Die Welt'. He further promised that the network would be technologically reliable from the start.
Kuckowski is convinced the next mobile generation will be a great success, and that upcoming multimedia services such as video phoning or Video-MMS will bring in additional revenues.
The cost of end-user devices is estimated at about 300 euros and bound to a card contract. Vodafone also plans to revitalize its mobile phone branding system on the occasion of its UMTS launch. In addition to the producer's logo, the new phones will also carry the Vodafone symbol.
