Tokyo/Madrid (pte017/18.02.2003/11:48) - NEC subsidiary http://www.nec.com NEC Iberia has announced it will be delivering an i-mode platform to Spain's largest mobile network operator Telefonica Moviles http://telefonicamoviles.com.
The multimedia service, which is especially popular in Japan is to become accessible via GPRS by mid 2003 http://www.nec.co.jp/press/en/0302/1701.html
Last year NEC, which is licensed to run i-mode by its inventor NTT DoCoMo, was able to win Taiwanese network operator KG Telecom and French mobile provider Bouygues Telecom as clients for the multimedia platform. Taiwan thereby became the first Asian market outside of Japan to offer the service.
In Germany, E-Plus has been trying to do business with i-mode for some time. Compared to the enormous success of i-mode in Japan, however, the acceptance remains modest. Only 150 content partners use the platform in Germany, and the number of E-Plus customers is sinking. In addition, only one i-mode-capable mobile phone was available at E-Plus for some time. Since mid December, the selection has been expanded to include three models.
E-Plus's fee for i-mode is 3 euros per month, with another 0.25 to 2 euros for subscriptions. Data transfer generally costs 1 cent per kilobyte.
An online simulation of the German service can be tested at http://www2.eplus-imode.de.
