Lausanne, Switzerland (pte034/14.02.2003/13:40) - Teenagers who have a good relationship with their mums are less likely to become addicted to alcohol or drugs, according to an international study. Researchers from the Centre for Alcohol and Drug Problems (SFA) in the Swiss town of Lausanne conducted a study of some 4,000 school children aged between 14 and 15 from around Europe - including pupils from Newcastle upon Tyne.
They reported: "Youths who have good relationships with other family members, and especially those who have a particularly trusting relationship to their mothers, are more likely to lead healthy lives without alcohol and drugs". As well as teenagers from Newcastle, youngsters from Bremen in Germany, Dublin, Groningen in the Netherlands and Rome were also asked about their familial relationships. http://www.sfa-ispa.ch/
