Job cuts looming at Nokia Networks
Finnish group plans to consolidate R&D

Helsinki (pte017/13.02.2003/12:01) - Finnish mobile phone giant Nokia Networks http://www.nokia.com has announced plans to cut 550 jobs in research and development.

By closing several of its R&D locations and centralizing its technological research, the group hopes to increase synergy effects and save costs.

Among those locations most likely to close is the broadband research department in Santa Rosa, California, whose activities may be concentrated in Espoo, Finland. Also scheduled to close is Nokia's R&D developer in Kista, Sweden.

Some of the 550 employees affected by the lay-offs may be re-located to other sections of the group. One British firm may be adapted to meet the demand in hardware development.

The closing of Nokia's R&D locations in Sweden, the USA, Finland and Great Britain comes as a surprise after the mobile phone producer reported positive result in 2002. According to an official statement by Nokia, the group is interested in improving its competitiveness and focusing its research on core technologies.
