Oslo (pte052/10.02.2003/20:59) - Recognising that mobile operators are indeed facing technical and financial difficulties in their attempts to roll out 3G networks, the Norwegian government has moderated its requirements for the provision of the new service.
Now, operators have an additional 15 months to complete the roll-out of 3G coverage, although the government has yet to announce what sort of compensation the companies will
have to pay for this relaxation.
Having awarded four licences in 2000, Norway has since seen one operator go bankrupt, and another return its licence, complaining that, in the end, a 3G network was too expensive. The two returned licences are to be auctioned off again, this time, with a reduces coverage demand of 30 per cent, compared with the previous 40 per cent.
