Vienna (pte005/08.02.2003/17:22) - Vienna's citizens will soon be crunching Greek sea salt beneath their feet rather than the usual Austrian variety after city officials were forced to change salt suppliers. The city department responsible for distributing salt onto the city's snow-covered streets in winter, the MA48, has used the same Austrian salt supplier each year, the Salinen AG, but following serious delivery problems they were forced to change to one who deals in Greek sea salt. The distribution of salt costs enormous amounts of money with thousands of tons of salt being poured out onto the streets. http://www.wien.gv.at
Some 9,500 tons of salt have already been spread this year due to the particularly harsh weather conditions and the length of this winter. In comparison only 7,000 tons were distributed over the entire winter season last year with the amount falling to as little as 4,000 tons in short winters. Now in order to ensure this year's supply does not run out, officials are spreading the Greek salt thinly over the ground, using only a few teaspoons-full per square meter. "This method also protects the environment," said a government spokeswoman.
