Survey: broadband users are movie-buffs

New York (pte042/07.02.2003/16:22) - Few consumers have tested online movie rentals, but interest is growing amongst online consumers and particularly broadband users, according to a new survey from Forrester. http://www.forrester.com

According to the research conducted in North America, only 2 per cent of dial-up and 10 per cent of broadband subscribers have rented a movie through an online service like Netflix. http://www.netflix.com The proportion of users interested in trying such a service in the future was reasonably high, however, at 13 per cent and 25 per cent respectively.

Amongst broadband users, approximately 34 per cent are now thought to stream video from the web and 31 per cent to download it. The research also revealed that the average broadband user had a collection of 55 video tapes and 16 DVDs, indicating a general 'movie-buff' correlation with broadband that is good news for rental service providers.

The survey warns, however, that repeat business is far from guaranteed - half of those consumers who have tried online rentals have said they will not do so again.
