Vienna, Austria (pte047/06.02.2003/21:26) - The number of internet users in Poland rose from 3.6 to 5.2 million in 2002, or by 44.4 per cent year-on-year, according to SMG/KRC, a public opinion research institute.
The portals enjoying the greatest popularity are onet http://www.Onet.pl , which is visited by 72.84 per cent of all Polish internet users (up 11.31 per cent), followed by Wirtualna Polska, http://www.wirtualna.pl/ visited by 58.57 per cent (up 6.74 per cent) and Interia, http://www.interia.pl visited by 36.4 per cent (up 15.35 per cent). There has been also observed an increase in number of everyday users which is up almost 3 per cent from the year before.
A significant increase in the number of e-purchases has also been observed. In 2002, 120,000 transactions were carried out, worth a total of E6.2m (PLN26m), representing increases of 226 per cent and 274 per cent, respectively. The average transaction value was E52 (PLN217). The market leader is eCard, which authorises transactions in 311 of the 700 Polish e-shops, a 44 per cent share on the market.
