Osnabrueck (pte006/01.02.2003/15:37) - A pilot scheme - thought to be the first in the world - has been set up in Germany allowing passengers on busses to buy tickets using their mobile phones. Peter Horenburg from the bus company in Osnabrueck where the project is being carried out, said: "Passengers have to register with us first via the Internet and then they can buy tickets using their mobile phones."
Passengers send a message to the bus company saying where they want to go and get one back confirming the purchase. The bus driver is shown the message as the riders board. In order to prevent cheating a code is sent with the message each day to ensure out-of-date tickets aren't used. Bus company bosses believe the state subsidised project is the first of its kind in the world.
