Austrian beer soon more expensive
Brau Union plans 6 per cent increase due to rising costs

Vienna (pte045/31.01.2003/11:48) - Austria's leading manufacturer of beer, the Brau Union, has said that it will increase its prices by up to six per cent in spring to offset rising costs. Brau Union produces Goesser, Zipfer, Puntigamer, Reininghaus, Schwechater and Wieselburger beer. The chairman of Brau Union Austria, Johann Sulzberger, said the higher costs of barley and energy had pushed up the company's costs. He said that the price of beer had increased only slightly since the 1990s. "The price increases of the last few years have just not been passed on," Sulzberger said, pointing out the constant relation between the consumer price index and the shop price of a bottle of beer. The price increase comes as the consumption of beer per head rose in 2002 after a slight dip in 2001. In 2002, beer consumption rose by 1.8 per cent.
