Tea gets trendy in Germany
English style tea shops were taking over from coffee houses in popularity

Hamburg (pte046/29.01.2003/21:42) - Tea is taking over from alcopops and flavoured vodka as the drink to be seen sipping in Germany. Marketing Expert Esin Rager from Hamburg said: "Tea is trendy at the moment not only because it tastes good and there are so many varieties, but also because it's healthy."

And Monika Beutgen, manager of the German Tea Association, said that as well as drinking tea in trendy bars, English style tea shops were taking over from coffee houses in popularity. She said: "In many big cities tea shops are opening up with both the young and old meeting for a cup of tea. Hotels and restaurants are also jumping on the tea bandwagon with many offering English breakfast tea as the drink of the week."

Beutgen said the increasing popularity of the hot beverage among Germans could be a result of the many pop stars that are reaching for the tea bags. US electro-musician Moby opened his own tea room, Teany, in New York last year while Robbie Williams says he likes to celebrate his success "alone and relaxed with a good cup of tea".
