London (ptp020/06.07.2016/14:35) - "Brain health in an ageing population - The ageing brain" is this year's motto of World Brain Day which is going to be celebrated on July 22. The World Federation of Neurology's intention for this year's World Brain Day is to increase awareness about the treatment and prevention of brain and neuromuscular diseases affecting mostly elderly persons.
The global share of persons aged 60 and over is more than 800 million or 12 percent of the global population and is growing, with the expectation that it will reach more than two billion (21 percent) by 2050. The prevalence of a number of neurological diseases increases with age, including stroke, dementia, and Parkinson's disease. It is estimated that 10 to 20 percent of people aged 60 to 80 years suffer from one or more of these diseases.
In order to support journalists interested in covering World Brain Day 2016, the World Federation of Neurology (WFN) will issue the following material which will be made available as from 19 July 2016 at https://www.wfneurology.org/world-brain-day-2016 :
