Leipzig (pts009/24.04.2006/09:45) - Leipzig Tourist Service's monthly brand new information service brings all interested readers up to date on all the latest news and happenings in Leipzig. This new service includes brief texts along with printable photos and links guiding you towards additional details. Once it's been dispatched, the newsletter will also be made available free of charge by pressetext.de via http://www.Leipzig.de press portal.

Richard Schrumpf, who's successfully captained tourism marketing for Leipzig for the past decade, describes the new information-service as "the contemporary, attractive form of information for journalists, the media and opinion-leaders". He continues: "Being one of the host cities for the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany", Leipzig is currently being talked about all over the world. We provide tour brochures about the city in thirteen languages along with an extensive press service and take bookings for our own package tours."

One of the most extraordinary exhibitions in the world
Celebrities' handprints at STRASSE der STARS®
Städtisches Kaufhaus now houses one of the most extraordinary exhibitions in the world. Known as STRASSE der STARS®, it features celebrities' handprints as well as in some cases complete models of hands and many other personal items. So far more than 70 stars have been immortalised in Leipzig for the exhibition, including Mariah Carey, Michael Schumacher, Kurt Masur, Claudia Schiffer, Katharina Witt, Jon Bon Jovi, Aerosmith and Heidi Klum. Richard Schrumpf, CEO of Leipzig Tourist Service, came up with the project back in 1988. "STRASSE der STARS® isn't meant to be just a copy of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. I want it to be regarded as something in its own right, something more original," he explains. "And thanks to a generous private initiative, STRASSE der STARS® can now be displayed at a prestigious location. The handprints and personal items have all been cast in epoxy resin and are displayed to great effect in illuminated showcases."

Pupils become ambassadors
Leipzig meets Houston
A new element in a flourishing partnership: school students have been crowned ambassadors and will be addressing new target groups in their twin towns. In 2005, LTS came up with the idea of launching a competition for schoolchildren in conjunction with the Leipzig-Houston Friends' Association. Participants from Leipzig and Houston were expected to demonstrate their knowledge of their twin city and its country, and also had to take a test in the other city's language. The winners have now been chosen and Maria Otto (16), Marlen Weise (16) and Sarah David (16) can all look forward to a 10-day trip to Houston in October 2006. All three of them are in Year 10 at Frederick Schiller School in Gohlis. The winners from Houston - Stephanie Livieres (15), Kristin Kiel (16) and Tina Li (17) - will be arriving in Leipzig in late June 2006.

Tourism magazine NÄHER dran
Leipzig and the Leipzig Fair
For nearly a millennium, the very name Leipzig has been synonymous with fairs of all descriptions. In fact there can hardly be any other city whose development has been so closely intertwined with its local fair. Back in the eleventh century, Leipzig profited from its location at the crossroads of two major trade routes, the Via imperii and Via regia. More and more merchants made Leipzig the centre of their activities, paving the way for its international reputation as a city where some of the most important fairs of the day were held. The construction of the Leipzig Fair's new exhibition centre in 1996 laid the foundations for its successful continuation. And just recently, on 12 April, it celebrated its tenth anniversary. What better occasion for NÄHER dran to make the history of the Leipzig Fair its cover story?

Leipzig - where music comes to life!
Musical tourism: Leipzig's unique heritage
No other city in Germany has such a lively, prestigious musical tradition as Leipzig. For instance, it was here that Johann Sebastian Bach spent 27 years in charge of St Thomas's Boy Choir, Robert Schumann composed the Spring Symphony, Richard Wagner was born, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy conducted the Gewandhaus Orchestra for many years, and Albert Lortzing wrote his successful opera "Tsar and Carpenter" - to mention but a few examples. Starting in the 13th century, Leipzig rapidly developed into the most important centre of music in Germany and is still home to a string of superlatives. St Thomas's Boys Choir, the Gewandhaus Concert Hall and Leipzig Opera House are nowadays all world-famous.
