Stamford, CT, USA (pte052/20.07.2005/17:46) - According to a Gartner http://www.gartner.com report released on Tuesday, worldwide mobile phone sales are predicted to reach one billion per year by the end of the decade, which means that 40 per cent of the world's population will own one.
Mobile ownership in Asian countries, where currently 25 per cent of all mobile phones are sold, will increase to 2.6 billion by 2009.
The Garnet report shows that the mobile phone is the most popular electronic device worldwide. More people own mobiles than cameras, PCs, and even landline phones.
Sales in Asia continue to grow, but the pace of sales is a global phenomenon.
"The sales volume can't be attributed to one region in particular," wrote Carolina Milanesi, Gartner's principal handset analyst. "It's a truly global phenomenon."
The sale of smart phones, the more hi-tech mobiles with advanced features, will represent one-fifth of all mobile phone sales by 2008. Mobile phone operating system makers such as Symbian, Microsoft and others are hoping that the smart phone market will take off.
