Computer virus alert after London bombings
A malicious programme is currently being spread via email

London (pte036/11.07.2005/13:40) - A Windows virus has been unleashed by virus writers - just days after the London Underground terrorist attacks.

The virus takes the form of a link in a legitimate-looking email from CNN and connects users to amateur footage of the aftermath. Clicking on the link will infect users' computers, opening up the system to the virus creator.

The subject of the email is: "TERROR HITS LONDON" and comes from a fabricated sender.

A file named 'London terror moovie.avi' is attached. Following a long series of blank spaces is the real title of the file that is attached. The file is artificially labelled: 'Checked by Norton Antivirus.exe'.

The supposed video does not run, instead the users' PC will be infected by a yet un-named Trojan, and will affect the start-up system, reporting to the creator of the virus and becoming part of a spam-sending zombie network.

The programme relies on people clicking on the attachment, and can affect Windows 2000, 95, 98, Me, NT, XP and Windows Server 2003.

Security companies such as Norton http://www.symantec.com warn that, although the programme is not widely distributed, updating anti-virus software is an absolute necessity.
