Berlin (pte034/08.07.2005/15:00) - In-flight mobile phone use is predicted to be possible as soon as next year, says consultancy firm Booz Allen Hamilton http://www.boozallen.com .
According to the international company, airlines will be offering mobile phone in-flight services in 2006, as the market begins to ripen.
It is predicted that the service will grow rapidly in 2008, growing annually at rates between 30 and 60 per cent. By 2010, the firm says, 100 million people will be using mobiles on aeroplanes, which will generate an estimated Eur2 billion within Europe alone by the end of the decade.
Market growth will coincide with the lowering of call tariffs, though the service will be initially more expensive than normal roaming costs.
The initial tariff for an in-flight call will probably be Eur1, and is expected to sink to between Eur0.75 and Eur0.50 per minute.
