Tokyo (pte041/30.06.2005/14:01) - Speecys http://www.speecys.com , a Japanese company based in Tokyo, has developed a 50-centimetre tall, 4.2 kilogram robot that carries a built-in hydrogen cylinder. The only by-product of the robot's functioning is water. Electricity is produced through fuel cells, which produce a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen.
Fuel-cell batteries are easily replaced and take less time to recharge than conventional batteries.
Speecys, which is headed by former Sony robot engineer Tomoaki Kasuga, said in a statement that, "Fuel cells are a promising material as the source of energy for operating robots in the future."
"We believe that it is more suitable for (humanoid) robots to get fuel in cartridges as if they were having meals rather than to get batteries recharged," it said.
The company will begin selling its product at 2.5 million yen (18,842 euros) a unit, which is five times more expensive than the previous version that ran on conventional nickel metal hydride batteries.
