Microsoft CEO warns of online fraud and stolen identity
Internet users shouldn't become too complacent about www risks

Washington (pte041/10.06.2005/16:00) - Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer http://www.microsoft.com has expressed his concern to those who purchase items via Internet about the risks of financial fraud and stolen identity.

Worried that consumers using the Internet have become complacent about the risks, Ballmer said: "I don't want trepidation high, but on the other hand I want people aware of what's going on and taking appropriate precautions. I'm afraid that may have declined, a little too much."

Representing the largest computer software company in the world, Ballmer met with technology executives from the Washington-based Business Software Alliance http://www.bsa.com , and congressional leaders and members of the Bush administration to lobby over Internet security, foreign trade and protections against software piracy.

"Convenience is improving rapidly," Macromedia Inc's CEO Stephen Elop. "Things I might have been a bit hesitant to do a couple years ago, I'm willing to go a bit further with today even with some security concerns."

Elop stress the monitoring of children and their Internet usage. "We need to oversee and use technology and teach our children what's appropriate," said Ballmer. "Some of it's still going to have to come from parents kind of teaching their kids what's right. That was true even before the Internet."
