'Cause of infertility' is an unhealthy lifestyle
Scientists find that heavy smoking and drinking can lead to infertility

Bahrain (pte034/03.06.2005/13:34) - Indian gynaecologist and infertility expert Dr K M Vani of the KIMS Bahrain Medical Centre says that 'gender-bending' pollutants - by-products of the petrol and plastic industries, such as phenols - combined with an unhealthy lifestyle can lead to infertility in women and men.

"The possibility of environmental pollutants increases the risk of infertility in men," Dr Vani said. "Especially due to the contamination of our ecosystem with estrogen.

"More particularly in the GCC, the carbon monoxide pollution of the atmosphere by the burning oil wells in the last decade is an added reason."

According to a recent World Health Organisation http://www.who.int/eng report infertility is on the rise. The report says that about eight per cent of couples will experience some form of infertility during their reproductive lives.

"Late age of marriage, sexual promiscuity, repeated abortions which lead to pelvic infection and tubal blockage are some of the factors worth mentioning," Vani added.

"Infertility and subfertility are a worldwide cause of concern for all the couples who are affected and a challenge for those in the medical field.

Dr Vani received her medical degree from Madras and post-graduate degree from Manipal, India and now works at the recently opened clinic. She and her colleagues will be assessing infertility and will treat couples who are trying to have a child.
