Tokyo (pte056/31.05.2005/16:25) - In a statement released by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology http://www.mext.go.jp/english on Monday the Japanese government intends to develop a computer that can process over a quadrillion calculations per second by 2010.
Currently the fastest computer, built for the US Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Agency, makes 70.72 trillion calculations per second.
Japan's own super machine - the fastest in the world until Silicon Graphics Inc. and Blue Gene produced a faster one - is currently NEC Corporation's Earth Simulator, which processes nearly 36 trillion calculations per second.
For years now the US and Japan have been competing for technological supremacy. Each country's machines have furthered research in advanced climate forecasting, medical research and other areas.
According to the ministry official Japan's supercomputer would assist medical researchers to find out how the human body breaks down and processes certain medicines.
Involved in the development of the supercomputer are NEC, Hitachi http://www.hitachi.com , the University of Tokyo and Kyushu University. The costs have not yet been disclosed.
