New York (pte005/30.05.2005/07:59) - Sony BMG http://www.sonybmg.com has released about 10 commercial titles with an anti-CD-burning code onto the market in order to curb CD pirating and copying. The discs were developed in the United Kingdom by First4Internet http://www.first4internet.co.uk , an anti-piracy company, and feature special technology that allows limited copies of discs to be made, but bars copies being made from copies - what's called 'sterile burning'.
First4Internet chief executive officer Mathew Gilliat-Smith said: "The secure burning solution is the sensible way forward."
Due to an increase of piracy and copying of discs in the entertainment industry that affects sales, Sony and other major labels have been keen to develop such a product. "The casual piracy, the school-yard piracy, is a huge issue for us," said Thomas Hesse, president of global digital business for Sony BMG. "Two-thirds of all piracy comes from ripping and burning CDs, which is why making the CD a secure format is of the utmost importance."
The names of the titles released by Sony have not been disclosed.
So far copy protection technology has not excluded the copying of copied discs. Earlier versions of such discs as well as Digital Rights Management (DRM)-protected files were sold online by iTunes and Napster.
The sterile burning concept uses embedded DRM and blocks the copying of copies.
Other entertainment labels will begin trials using sterile burning next month.
