New Google home page tool bars
Google launches new option for webpage users

Mountain View, US (pte023/20.05.2005/12:00) - Visitors to Google Inc's website http://www.google.com will now be able to add their own tools to the relatively bare search engine home page. The competitive move brings it closer to its rivals Yahoo http://www.yahoo.com and MSN.com http://www.msn.com .

The feature is available at http://labs.google.com, and by signing into a personalised account, users can add toolbars such as the weather, an email box, news, stock market information and movie listings to the home page.

Up until now Google's home page has been relatively empty, providing only a search box and a few tabs for shopping and news.

Marissa Mayer, Google's director of consumer products said that Google is "still interested in getting people off our site to the places that they want to go (online)," and is not trying to encourage people to spend more time on the site.

According to a study done by comScore Media Metrix last month in the US, Google is fourth in the search engine ranking - 78.6 million users - behind Yahoo (114.8 million visitors), MSN (97 million) and AOL (86 million).
