New York (pte035/11.05.2005/13:45) - The new Windows Mobile, launched by Bill Gates in Las Vagas on Tuesday, adds PowerPoint viewing and makes it easier to connect accessories such as typewriter keyboards and iPod-sized hard drives.
At the Microsoft http://www.microsoft.com launch Gates introduced the Windows Mobile 5.0, saying that it 'offers more platform flexibility to customize devices and solutions; productivity enhancements that include updated Microsoft Office software and persistent memory storage for more efficient data management; and a powerful multimedia experience with Windows Media® Player 10 Mobile and support for hard drives'.
Also updated are the mobile versions of Microsoft Word and Excel, which better allow document formatting from other computers and chart creation from a spreadsheet.
The five-year-old Pocketbook PC brand for PDA's and he separate Smartphone label have been eliminated, bringing the Windows Mobile in direct competition with rival mobile device platforms such as Symbian and BlackBerry.
"In the past five years, there's been a profound shift in the kind of data and services people access on their mobile devices -- from multimedia to business applications," Gates said. "Windows Mobile 5.0 enables our industry partners to develop exciting new hardware designs and solutions that will revolutionize how customers use mobile devices," he concluded.
