New York (pte052/03.05.2005/16:04) - Time Warner http://www.timewarner.com embarrassedly announced today, Tuesday, that a container carrying computer back-up tapes was lost during shipment. The tapes contained personal information on current and former employees. They didn't, however, include any information on Time Warner customers.
The tapes were lost on their way to an outside data storage firm facility, which has been used by Time Warner for some years to protect its computerized data.
Time Warner and the outside data storage firm have sought assistance from the U.S. Secret Service. The investigation has found no evidence that the data has been accessed or misused. Employees whose data may be on the tape have been notified and have been told that the company will use all its resources to monitor credit reports should unusual activity arise.
Time Warner's Senior Vice President and Chief Security Officer, Larry Cockell said: "We take the security of our employees' personal information extremely seriously and we deeply regret that this incident occurred."
"We are working closely and aggressively with law enforcement and the outside data storage firm to get to the bottom of this matter," Cockell concluded.
