London (pte027/02.05.2005/12:16) - After having conquered the home and office PC world, the creators of Windows are now channelling their efforts into making the home cosier and more comfortable - using advanced computer software and calling it the 'digital lifestyle'.
A show house in London now demonstrates how software can enhance the quality of living by combining it with consumer audio, video and computer products. Although Microsoft claims that the house is not meant to be futuristic, but rather designed to use what is aviailable in most retail stores today, the house is controlled by a single menu connecting television, radio, video games, digital photo albums and standard PC functions, among other things.
Since the first Media Center package was introduced in the United States three years ago, two million packages have been installed globally.
Other devices, such as a bedroom mirror that can also be used as a flat screen TV, computer display and for digital picture frames - a Philips product that starts at about £1,800, or $3,400 - and several portable gadgets are available.
Cynthia Crossley, director of the Windows client group for Microsoft in Britain, acknowledges that not every customer can afford each gadget in the Microsoft Home all at once, but that some of the devices are not that expensive and can be acquired over time.
