Russian companies not allowed .eu names
Russian firms only able to use domains if they have subsidiaries in the EU

Moscow (pte035/31.03.2005/14:30) - Russian companies will only be able to get .eu names if they have branches and subsidiaries in the European Union. As the Russian news and information agency Novosti http://en.rian.ru reports, the European Internet domain .eu will be launched in later 2005 by the non-profit organisation EURid, the European Registry for Internet Domains. 500 million potential European candidates for the new domain will converge in a "gold rush" for the prestigious new web address. "We do not plan to register .eu domains. This top-level pan-European domain is created for Eu companies and organisations and people living on EU territory," said Natalia Khokhlova of the PR department of the Russian Research Institute of Public Relations Development.

At present, Russian companies may not register a .eu domain name. "Russian companies do not meet general requirements outlined in EU regulations for .eu. However, companies or their branches registered in the European Union can get a .eu name," said Bart Lieben, legal counsel with PricewaterhouseCoopers.
