Three quarters of all companies using broadband
RFID technology important to business strategy

London (pte020/08.02.2005/11:30) - Over three quarters of all companies are now using broadband, according to a new survey. Furthermore, more than a third say that radio frequency identification (RFID) technology is important to their business strategy. As Computer Weekly http://www.computerweekly.com reports, the numbers are reported in the Communications Management Association's (CMA) http://www.thecma.com annual membership survey, published today at its annual conference in London. "Last year, 77 per cent of companies were using broadband, which is roughly what we predicted in 2001," said a CMA spokesman. According to the survey, newer technologies are also experiencing relatively high support and take-up.

35 per cent of CMA members said that RFID was "important for our business strategy". RFID is most useful for supply chain systems as it allows organisations to track materials and finished goods from the warehouse to the end customer. According to the CMA, the adoption of voice over IP is also experiencing high take-up, with 42 per cent of companies using it to cut their communications costs and deliver new phone features to users. VoIP allows companies to bypass the public switched telephone network and support packaged IP calls to enable free or cheaper calls. An additional 15 per cent of those surveyed are "planning VoIP implementations within 12 months", and a further 28 per cent are evaluating the technology.

However, not all new communications technology is popular. According to the survey, 41 per cent of companies feel that instant messaging technology poses a security risk to their companies. Some companies already ban the use of MSN, Yahoo and AOL in the workplace, as such "peer to peer" systems could potentially be used to spread viruses and malware.
