New Delhi company markets cheap PDA
Device to cost only 200 dollars

New Delhi (pte028/26.06.2003/14:48) - Indian firm Mistral Software http://www.mistralsoftware.com plans to make the most of a weak PDA market by launching a cheap, scaleable handheld.

The device presented by Mistral today, Thursday, will cost about 200 dollars - a full three hundred less than units sold by competitors HP or Palm. According to company president Anees Ahmed, Mistral plans to have OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) produce the cheap PDA.

"We have developed the device with a scaleable architecture that permits OEMs to fit it to suit their customers' needs and add functions such as GPS, Bluetooth, cameras or MP3 players," said Ahmed. The PDA has a colour display, flash storage and a 200 megaherz processor. Ahmed says it can be used for applications such as navigation, games, logistic tasks and health.

Mistral hopes the introduction of a cheap alternative to more expensive PDAs will prove a success on the stagnating handheld market.

"Price and functionality are the biggest obstacles to sales," said Ahmed. He says this is why his firm decided to create a cost-saving unit with scaleable features.

Mistral currently employs 175 people and recently posted an annual turnover of five million dollars.
