South Sea island as WLAN paradise
Free access for everyone, including tourists

Alofi (pte035/24.06.2003/17:11) - While most Internet users can only dream of an entire province with free WLAN-coverage, this has become reality on the South Sea island of Niue, which has its own parliament but is represented by New Zealand.

Known for its ccTLD.NU domain, the island will soon be offering free online WLAN access, as reported by BWCS. The project organised by the Niue Internet User's Society http://www.niue.nu has been financed through fees collected for domain registration under .NU.

Since 1999 residents of Niue have had free online access using telephone lines. But because the phone lines are often damaged by tropical storms, WLAN is the more reliable option. The Internet User's Society is even working on solar-driven access points for the island's more remote areas.

The free offer will be available to residents and tourists alike, including those arriving by yacht.

Known as "the rock", the island was formed by a corral reef. Its 2,000 inhabitants get their drinking water from rain, as the island has no freshwater source.
