Hong Kong defeats SARS
No new infections in 20 days

London/ Geneva (pte026/23.06.2003/13:57) - The World Health Organization (WHO) http://www.who.int declared Hong Kong a SARS-free zone today, as reported by BBC Online http://news.bbc.co.uk .

In the past 20 days no new cases of the deadly lung disease have been reported, according to the WHO. In total, 296 people have died of SARS in Hong Kong. The WHO is calling the conquest of the disease in the region a historical success.

Meanwhile, Toronto is still fighting against the spread of the illness. In the last few days, two more people have died of SARS, with a total of 38 people having fallen victim to the lung illness in the Canadian city since the outbreak.

The most recent victims were an 81-year-old woman and a 55-year-old man. Both had come to Toronto to attend a benefit concert for SARS victims. All 70,000 tickets to the concert had sold out within hours and the line-up included musicians Avril Lavigne and Diana Krall.

In Hong Kong a total of 1,755 people have been infected with the disease. Of the 28 people still in hospital undergoing treatment, eleven are in intensive care. Over 1,400 people in Hong Kong have contracted the disease and survived.

The WHO has revoked all SARS-related travel advisories for cities with the exception of Beijing. According to official statistics, 347 out of 5,300 people infected with the disease in China have died.
