China reports no new SARS infections
WHO warns against complacency

Beijing (pte039/02.06.2003/15:02) - China has reported no new cases of SARS infection for the first time since the publication of its SARS statistics in April. It has, however, reported two new deaths from the disease.

In light of this development, the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned against complacency, pointing out that the illness is far from exterminated. Developments in Toronto have shown that the epidemic has been extremely difficult to get under control, even in a country with a highly developed health care system, said WHO speaker Bob Dietz in Beijing.

There is considerable concern over the situation in Canada. Although advisories were lifted in mid May, officials reported a new death on Sunday. Over 5,000 people in Canada, most of them in Toronto, have been placed under a ten-day quarantine. Ontario's health minister has said that those who break quarantine "ought to be chained to their beds".

A total of 31 people have died of SARS in Canada up to now. Due to the new cases of infection, Toronto has been placed back on the WHO's list of affected countries. In the meantime, Singapore has been taken off the list; no new cases have been reported since 11 May.

In China over 5,300 people have been infected with SARS and 334 have died. (newsfox-special SARS)
