Yahoo closes security gap in IM and chat client
Patches for both applications ready

Sunnyvale (pte035/02.06.2003/14:22) - Yahoo has published patches for it s Instant Messenger (IM) and chat client. According to the company, both applications are susceptible to buffer overflow attacks. As soon as users log into Yahoo's IM, they will be asked to install the updates http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mesg/use/use-45.html .

The security gaps could be used by an attacker to shut down individual applications on the user's PC or, in the worst case, the hacker could attain total control over the victim's system.

In order for the attack to be successful, the user must be lured onto a specially prepared website or open an HTML e-mail. According to Yahoo, no successful attacks have been reported.
