PC recycling programme planned in Japan
Trash collected by post office, fees collected at sale

Tokyo (pte035/30.05.2003/17:00) - Twenty-one Japanese PC manufacturers are launching a joint recycling programme to go into effect in September, 2003.

Japanese post offices will collect computer trash to be recycled from consumers. Up to now old PCs, which usually contain highly toxic materials, have been shredded and tossed in trash dumps once the metal parts have been removed. The new scheme has been introduced in response to new legal guidelines.

As of September, customers will have to pay a recycling fee when they purchase a PC. Once they pay, they receive an adhesive strip (see image) which is stuck to their computer. The system will, however, only take care of 20 per cent of all PCs expected to be thrown away in 2004 (1.6 million), as the majority of computer trash is not generated by the 21 manufacturers taking part in the scheme. By 2009 the amount is predicted to climb to 50 per cent.
