Fever-measuring at airports possible
ThermalVU determines body temperature from a distance

California (pte055/12.05.2003/16:07) - A new development by Indigo Systems Goleta allows the measuring of body temperature without the awareness of the person being monitored. ThermaSense is a joint development by the infra-red specialists Indigo Systems and http://www.indigosystems.com and WinSoft http://www.winsoft.com , and will be used in airports to support the fight against the SARS virus.

The product, according to Indigo, is a low-budget solution that has been developed particularly for the Asian market. It consists of a small infra-red camera, Omega, and software by the name of ThermaVU. The software analyses camera images of travellers' faces.

If the person's body temperature is above the programmed level, an alarm is activated. The software is set to a measuring accuracy of +/- 0.5 degrees Celsius. If the alarm is activated, the person in question is tested by a medical apparatus.

Several airlines are barring travellers from boarding a plane if their body temperature is above 37.5 degrees Celsius.
