Competition among media increasing
German study predicts recovery by 2004 at earliest

Berlin (pte026/09.05.2003/14:06) - Two thirds of German media market leaders are convinced competition among publishers, radio and television as well as the film industry has sharply increased and will continue to rise, reports a study by consultant and financial examiners KPMG http://www.kpmg.de .

KPMG interviewed 129 heads of publishing houses, film studios, radio stations and television stations for the survey. Half of all companies expect a revival of the advertising market by 2004, while 65 per cent expect to see new competition from foreign rivals. Many media heads consider difficult access to capital a major problem in the branch.

While 53 per cent of film, TV and radio heads believe competition will become more brisk, up to 77 per cent of publishers hold this view. Most media experts also predict the electronic media market will experience concentration at a faster rate than the print market.

Due to new and stricter capital guidelines for banks ("Basel II"), it has become harder for media firms to access capital. Half of those questioned believe this will affect film and TV production groups most, as they have a much higher need for financing. An alternative could be found in private equity or mezzanine capital.
