German PC market grows in first quarter
Fujitsu Siemens regains market leadership

Egham (pte051/06.05.2003/16:59) - The German PC market registered new growth in the first quarter of 2003. According to a Gartner market research study http://www.gartner.com released today, sales increased by 3.4 per cent compared to the first quarter of last year.

The number of business clients dropped by 2.2 per cent, while the consumer market grew by 10.9 per cent. Fujitsu Siemens was able to reassume the top position on the market, knocking discount producer Medion to second place, followed by Hewlett-Packard.

"The German PC market has developed against the generally negative economic trend in the last three months," said analyst Meike Escherich. She went on to point out, however, that "the trend in the business area is especially concerning, as the first quarter of the last year was also negative. Compared to 2001 the first quarter of this year even shows a 13 per cent decline."

While Medion has managed to become a pan-European PC producer, the question remains as to whether the company will be able to tap into the US market. German PC producer Vobis holds the fourth spot on the market, and Dell has stayed at fifth place.

"The price drop for PCs is continuing. This means that, in spite of higher total volume, profit margin and turnover are decreasing," said Escherich. "The market lacks the urgently needed financial boost that would contribute to a recovery of the PC business," she said.
