Saban has eyes for DSF
US billionaire outbids Karstadt-Quelle

Munich (pte032/06.05.2003/14:26) - Haim Saban has made a binding offer for German sports channel DSF http://www.sport1.de , as reported in Sueddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) today.

The US billionaire is reportedly offering a higher sum than Essen-based trade chain Karstadt-Quelle http://www.karstadtquelle.com , which pledged 20m euros together with its partners to buy the channel. The final decision on the future owner of DSF will most likely be made next week.

Saban has already secured ownership of German television group ProSiebenSat.1. His concept for DSF foresees close cooperation with Sat.1, which currently broadcasts German football and top sports. Under Saban, DSF would continue to show second league football games and less popular sports, such as basketball and handball. He also envisions DSF as a service provider for Sat.1.

According to SZ, Karstadt-Quelle does not intend to top Saban's offer. The trade group is convinced that it has the more attractive concept, which would have DSF remain an independent channel and use teleshopping shows to sell its own brand name products - especially in light of the upcoming Football World Cup 2006 in Germany. In preparation for a possible takeover of DSF, Karstadt-Quelle has secured broadcast rights.
