Growing demand for science journalism
More public interest in 'life science' topics

Gütersloh (pte020/30.04.2003/11:48) - The need for science reporting is on the rise, according to recent a study funded by the Bertelsmann Foundation http://www.bertelsmann-stiftung.de .

Over 60 per cent of journalists questioned in the study carried out in Germany predict a growing public interest in science topics, and especially the 'life sciences'.

Carried out by the University of Münster, the study questioned 40 regularly employed editors and freelance journalists who report on science for German newspapers, as well as 30 media heads.

Over 90 per cent of journalists believe that 'life science' topics such as nutrition, health, medicine, and gene and bio-technology will become central topics in the future and play an important role in maintaining readership.

"It's of special importance that decision makers such as chief editors, department heads and head editors consider this market to be developing positively in spite of the current economic crisis among daily papers," said Marcel Machill, a consultant at the Bertelsmann Foundation.

Over 60 per cent of media heads expect the number of publication possibilities for science journalists to increase. Based on the positive market prognosis, 70 per cent of those questioned think there is also a need for further education opportunities.

The Bertelsmann Foundation, BASF AG and the Volkswagen Foundation have already set up a joint project called "Qualification Programme for Science Journalism" to help journalists brush up on their science skills. The first of several one-week seminars to be held around Germany will take place in Bremen from 4 to 9 October.
