Solving the spam problem
Heuristic filter to catch unwanted emails

Ratingen (pte025/18.04.2003/14:32) - The American internet security technology company Symantec http://www.symantec.com has found a multistage solution to deterring and getting rid of spam, unwanted email deliveries. The filter engine can stop undesirable emails and also viruses from entering mailboxes. The spam filter programme is called "Anti-virus for SMTP Gateways 3.1".

The heuristic filter engine inspects each message using certain criteria. For this Artificial Neural Network (ANN) Technology is used. Administrators can define the categories of spam, which range from minimal to maximal unwanted mail.

The filter can then be programmed to sort mails that look suspect in any way and to classify them as spam, thus filtering the mailbox. In addition, black lists from unwanted third parties can also be registered.

There are currently 125 such lists open to the public. It is also possible to create a black list and a white list. By creating a white list the filter allows mistakenly black-listed senders to be re-entered on the desired-mail list.
