Apple refutes Universal offer
CEO claims that no bid was made

Cupertino (pte025/17.04.2003/13:39) - Steve Jobs, CEO and founder of the computer manufacturing firm Apple http://www.apple.com, has denied that his company ever made an offer for the French company Vivendi Universal. At the same time, Jobs admitted that discussion about buying the French branch of Universal had been underway. He also didn't exclude the possibility that an offer could be made in the future, reports the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

Apple is said to still be interested in Vivendi and that the discussions are currently in the beginning stages. Thus making it unlikely that a formal bid be made to the Vivendi board of directors before the 29th April.

Apple presented its balance sheet for the second quarter, which showed Apple Computer's net revenue in 2003 as being US$14m, compared to last year's at the same time, US$40m - a minus of 65 per cent. Profit is rising. Second-quarter figures show the first profitable quarter for half a year. Which show Apple in the red. With a profit of US$0.40 per share (last year, 11 cents) the result is still higher than Wall Street analysts predicted - 2 cents a share.

In the last quarter 711,000 Apple computers were sold.
