Universal may sell to Apple
Other companies also interested

New York/Paris (pte033/14.04.2003/14:00) - Software giant Microsoft is currently negotiating the purchase of Vivendi Unversal http://www.vivendiuniversal.com ,yet the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reports that the music label is negotiating the possibility of sale with several other companies. At the end of last week Apple Computers was interested in making a bid for the label.

Apple is in the process of developing its own digital music service and is negotiating the licensing of their upcoming online music services. The management of Universal is concerned about lack of public interest. According to WSJ, Apple Chief chief executive, Steve Jobs, who is considered to be one of the few top managers in the music industry, has connections to the creative channels in the music business. Jobs has already been successful in the entertainment industry with his animation company Pixar.

Due to the current world-wide decline in turnover in the music branch, the Paris office of Universal Music Group was waiting to sell the music business at a later date. Up til now, Vivendi chief executive Jean-Rene Fourtou had concentrated his publicity and sales pitch on film studios, TV stations and theme parks. He is, however, also said to be open to other options that Universal Music might have.
