EU parliament votes to ban cloning
Members divided on research with embryos

Strasbourg (pte022/11.04.2003/11:19) - The EU Parliament is demanding a comprehensive ban on the cloning of human embryos http://www.europarl.eu.int , which is to include so-called therapeutic cloning.

In the first reading, 234 members of parliament supported a petition to change legislation to introduce the complete ban and 217 voted against it.

However, a petition to ban research with additional embryos resulting from artificial insemination did not go through parliament: the vote was tied, with 232 members for and 232 members against the restriction. It is now up to the individual EU states to take a stance on the issue.

The EU Parliament also intends to stop trade with unmodified cells and tissues. Genetically modified cells are to be left out of the ban.
